Newcastle Theatre Royal tours offer chance to see behind the scenes and explore secret spaces
by Barbara Hodgson · ChronicleLiveIt's said to be acting legend Sir Ian McKellen's favourite theatre in the country and now the public has a chance to see it from his point of view. The Theatre Royal in Newcastle is inviting people in for behind-the-scenes tours and among the areas they never normally would have a chance to explore is backstage - and the outlook from the stage over the stunning auditorium.
It will be the first time that many theatre fans - more familiar with the view of the stage from their seats - will have an opportunity to see the opposite direction: the viewpoint of the performers. And the ornate auditorium, with its rich reds and golds, is a sight to behold.
It is no surprise that Sir Ian, who has become very familiar with the city theatre over his seven-decade career, is said to love performing here. He is believed to have first acted on its stage in 1969 and in more recent years has twice appeared there alongside Sir Patrick Stewart, in Waiting For Godot then No Man's Land.
The theatre's tours, which cost from £15 and last around one hour and 10 minutes, will also take in the likes of the Green Room where performers relax before and after their shows. The route will follow from the foyer into the depths of the building and en route visitors will also learn about the theatre's colourful history and how productions are staged.
The theatre invites people to "step beyond the curtain and discover the magic that brings performances to life", adding: "Our exclusive behind-the-scenes tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the hidden world of theatre." Those wanting to make the day even more of a treat can take advantage of an offer which is being made to all tour bookers, of 10% off hot or soft drink in the theatre's cafe-bar The Green Room following the tour.
Upcoming tours will take place on Saturday mornings on June 27; July 25; August 29 and September 26. There is a choice of time slots, at 10am and 10.30am, but they are limited to just 20 people per session so it is a good idea to book early if interested.
Children aged 10-plus, with adult supervision, are also welcome. The theatre points out that the route includes multiple staircases so is not suitable for those with mobility issues and large bags are not allowed due to space issues.
Sensible footwear is advised and no open-toe shoes or heels, for instance, can be allowed on the stage, although access here is not guaranteed as it can be subject to availability, due to the needs of visiting shows. To book see the Theatre Royal website here.
