'World's oldest railway' in County Durham launches scenic rides on Mince Pie Express this Christmas
by Daniel Hall · ChronicleLiveA County Durham railway line which lays claim to being the world's oldest has invited visitors to hop on board its Mince Pie Express this Christmas.
Tanfield Railway takes visitors on a six-mile round trip through the rolling countryside between Gateshead and County Durham. And on selected dates in December, it will run stocked with mince pies and a selection of seasonal drinks during the journey.
Mince Pie Expresses take place on December 26, 29 and 31, with prices starting at £18 for adults and £5 for children. Tickets allow unlimited travel on the day.
There is some debate around which is the world's oldest railway, with the Middleton Railway in Leeds the world's oldest continuously working railway, and the Reisszug Cable Railway hauling freight using cables as far back as the 16th century. However, Tanfield will become the first working railway to celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2025.
David Watchman, general manager of the Tanfield Railway, said "We're absolutely delighted that tickets are now on sale for our hugely popular Mince Pie Express services. The event gives people the chance to experience the thrill of the world’s oldest railway, whilst tucking into some festive treats!"
The Mince Pie Express also marks the start of the railway's partnership with East Coast Mainline operator Lumo. It is the latest in a range of events and good causes supported by Lumo, including its official charity of the year The Charlie & Carter Foundation – an organisation based in South Shields that helps the parents of seriously ill children across the UK.
David continued: "This also marks the start of an exciting new partnership with Lumo – who we’re very excited to have on board with us."
Martijn Gilbert, managing director at Lumo, said it was an honour to support the Tanfield Railway. He said: "Even as a forward-thinking open access operator, it’s important that we never forget the region’s proud railway heritage."
