Leeds United edging closer to signing – Only pause is search for replacement

Leeds United have tempted Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi and are working on a total agreement to sign him.

On Thursday, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany of a verbal agreement between the centre-back and the Whites. The latter are preparing an offer to convince the German club.

There was no mention of the fee or the Bundesliga side’s demand. Regardless,Leeds United should be able to secure his services this summer.

Reuniting with Farke at Leeds United

The Switzerland international’s contract expires in 2027 and his ‘farewell is approaching’ if the conditions are right.

Nico Elvedi played under Daniel Farke at Gladbach and can reunite with the manager at Elland Road. The Bundesliga side won’t stand in his way to change clubs this summer, provided two key conditions are met.

The conditions Leeds United must meet

Last season, the defender starred for his club and followed it with an impressive run at the World Cup. This led to Gladbach manager Eugen Polański recently promoting Nico Elvedi to be vice-captain.

Taking this into account, Borussia Mönchengladbach want at least €10m. This is the first condition, and the second is they want a replacement before letting him leave.

The Leeds United target’s exit will leave a void in their defence. Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder is working on signing a centre-back, and Elvedi can only leave when they sign his replacement.

Schröder is ideally looking for a defender with Bundesliga experience. He considered bringing Kō Itakura back to the club in January, months after letting him join Ajax.

Itakura could be an option to replace the Swiss, and there are other names on Schröder’s list. Maybe Leeds United could offer Sebastiaan Bornauw.
