Manchester United in direct contact to sign Arsenal target – Idea of player plus cash deal floated
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessManchester United have reportedly joined Arsenal, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Atlético Madrid’s Julián Alvarez.
The Gunners have been pursuing the striker since last summer, when Atlético rejected their offer.
Arsenal and two other clubs could face a potential threat from Manchester United.
The Argentina international has publicly expressed his desire to leave the La Liga side this summer. He has his heart set on joining Barcelona, but their La Liga counterpart want to retain him
On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that if were to push for a move, Atlético would prefer a sale to Arsenal or PSG. These two clubs could afford to pay around €150m.
Manchester United approach for Arsenal target
AS journalist Marcos Durán mainly focuses his coverage on the Madrid club. He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report the latest on Michael Carrick’s side.
Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG are all keen on the 26-year-old. Manchester United have entered the race and have made direct contact with his agent.
The Red Devils have qualified for the Champions League and Durán insists they ‘have money’ to carry out this big operation. There’s also the possibility of lowering the price by including one of their own players as part of the deal.
In another post on X, he claims Atlético Madrid like several Manchester United players and have held talks with one of them. The journalist provides no details of this player.
After sharing this update, Durán gives his opinion that it would be difficult for Manchester United to sign the long-term Arsenal target.
Why Manchester United move unlikely
Atlético Madrid have publicly insisted Julián Alvarez won’t leave while the Spanish press states his starting price is €150m. He wants to join Barcelona and that’s another factor which makes the deal more complicated for others.
Manchester United have the striker position well covered, having invested in Benjamin Šeško last summer.
Taking these factors into account, it’s highly unlikely the Red Devils want to spend big on the Argentine, especially when there’s a need to strengthen other positions.
