Alexander Isak on why he doesn’t regret signing for Newcastle United – Explains thought process
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessAlexander Isak starred for Newcastle United last season, scoring 27 goals and contributing six assists from 42 matches.
The Sweden international’s displays for the Magpies saw him secure a late move to Liverpool last summer.
He’s yet to replicate his Newcastle United form at Anfield, but that didn’t stop him from winning the 2025 Guldbollen in Sweden this year.
Isak has given lengthy interview to Sportbladet to discuss numerous topics, and this includes his decision to join Newcastle United.
The striker arrived at the Tyneside club from Real Sociedad in August 2022. The move took place less than a year after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund [PIF] took over the Premier League side.
Isak had then received criticism for accepting a move to a club owned by Saudi’s PIF. Sportbladet asked whether players can make demands or take the criticism aimed at owners into account when deciding a potential transfer.
“No. I think that’s a very long shot. It’s a Premier League club, playing in England, in the best league in the world. If you have that option, it feels very far-fetched that you should say no to it because of their owners,” he said.
“From my perspective, a footballer’s perspective… As I said: you go to an English Premier League club.
“Then we understand how things can be twisted and turned. You can find negative things when it comes to everyone, and different things in our society. I think you have to take it for what it is. It’s an English club in the best league in the world, a step in your career.”
Newcastle United was seen as right career choice
The newspaper were one of those who were critical of the Swede’s decision to join Eddie Howe’s side.
They mentioned that during the interview, and the Liverpool played explained the thought process behind his decision to accept Newcastle United.
“It’s not that footballers don’t understand where the discussion is coming from. I just don’t think that’s where the emphasis is. You think about whether it’s a good decision for your career,” Isak explained.
