Transfer to Leeds United off before it got going – Ankle surgery for player

by · Sport Witness

Earlier this week, Tuttomercatoweb‘s Nicolo Ceccarini reported on Leeds United’s interest in AC Milan’s Santiago Gimenez.

This came right after Sunderland and West Ham emerged as suitors for the Mexican, who has been struggling with fitness for weeks.

He hasn’t once in Serie A this season, leading to Milan considering his sale. Now, Leeds United links are over before they get going.

The 24-year-old was struggling with an ankle problem and is now set to have surgery.

Milan manager Max Allegri confirmed this to the press on his arrival in Riyadh ahead of the Supercoppa Italiana.

The Italian said – relayed by Sportmediaset: “Gimenez underwent conservative therapy for a while, then in the last few days things got worse and after a consultation it was decided to operate.

“We hope to have him back as soon as possible.”

There doesn’t seem to be an exact timeline on when the striker could be back, but it won’t be January.

The Rossoneri saw his sale as a means to sign a striker in January. That desire could have seen Leeds United secure a loan deal, but it won’t be happening now.
