Newcastle United seriously moving for Gordon replacement – Magpies close to release clause

by · Sport Witness

Newcastle United are stepping up their efforts in the pursuit of CA Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz.

Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of Newcastle United tabling an offer of €35m plus bonuses. The winger, for his part, is willing to move to St. James’ Park this summer.

The La Liga side paid €5m to sign him from Real Madrid in July 2025 and he finished his debut season with seven goals and five assists from 37 matches.

His performances had caught Sunderland’s attention, and they offered up to €25m in the winter market. Both the player and Osasuna turned down the Black Cats.

It’s unclear whether Régis Le Bris’ side are still keen but their local rivals are working on securing the Spain international’s services.

Newcastle United want to avoid competition

Wednesday’s edition of Noticias de Navarra states Newcastle United are pushing to sign Víctor Muñoz.

Within the report, they explain the Premier League side’s planning and their urgency to sign him.

The English club identify the Spaniard as an ideal target to replace Anthony Gordon, who left them for Barcelona in May.

Eddie Howe’s side are well positioned to secure the 22-year-old’s services.

If Muñoz impresses at the World Cup, there could be more clubs lining up to sign him.

To avoid this scenario, Newcastle United are ‘looking to expedite the deal’ and sign him during the World Cup.

The report points out their offer is on the table, which is close to his €40m release clause.

Osasuna, for their part, are standing firm and referring to his clause to sanction a move. In other words, the Magpies, who tabled a €35m plus bonuses bid, have to improve their offer slightly.

Real Madrid are silent

Los Blancos retain 50% of rights and also have a buyback clause.

Real Madrid could veto his move to Newcastle United or another club. As of now, they are silent and it’s unclear what their final decision is on Víctor Muñoz.

In the event of a sale, the La Liga giants will benefit financially, which is another reason why CA Osasuna are referring to his clause.

The attacker’s contract lasts until 2030 and his value, as per Transfermarkt, is €30m.
