Leeds United and Coventry City presented great loan opportunity – Gamble worth taking
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessLeeds United and Coventry City have Juventus’ Loïs Openda on their transfer radar for the summer.
On April 16th, Sport Witness covered claims from Italy that the striker is attracting interest from Leeds United.
Later that month, we relayed news further backing the Whites’ interest in the 26-year-old. Daniel Farke’s side aren’t alone as Coventry City are also in the mix.
The Sky Blues have secured promotion to the top flight by winning the Championship and will look to improve Frank Lampard’s squad in the next window.
Last week, Sport Witness covered claims of Coventry City making contact with the Serie A side for Openda.
Encouragement for Leeds United and Coventry City
Last summer, Juventus took the Belgium international from RB Leipzig on loan with a conditional obligation to buy.
TuttoMercatoWeb report the conditions to buy him were satisfied less than a month ago. The Old Lady have to pay €40.5m to Leipzig, on top of the initial €3.3m loan fee.
This business has already turned down to be a total disaster for the Serie A side as he has two goals from 34 matches so far. It includes one goal in the league, in his side’s 2-1 win over AS Roma in December.
Loïs Openda has constantly struggled in this calendar year, directly impacting his playing time in recent weeks. He won’t even be a substitute under Luciano Spalletti next season.
The Turin club are looking to get rid of him but can’t recover the fee invested to buy him, even after removing what’s been amortised. Therefore, a loan move seems inevitable as it’ll help to improve his value and he can get regular minutes next season.
Leeds United and Coventry City have already shown interest in the frontman. Juve’s latest stance provides these two English clubs a great opportunity to sign him.
Our take: PL move can be beneficial
It’s clear Loïs Openda will hardly have any future at Juventus, and a summer exit is the best option for him.
He could consider a move to the Premier League, where the Whites and Frank Lampard’s side are his suitors.
It’ll be a loan deal, probably with a purchase option instead of an obligation. It’s worth Leeds United and the Championship winners taking a gamble, especially considering how he did at Leipzig.
