Newcastle United ‘at the forefront’ for transfer – €45m will seal Magpies deal
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessNewcastle United have long had Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini on their agenda and continue to show interest this summer.
Last summer, Sport Witness covered claims from Italy that the Magpies pushed to sign the centre-back, but a move never materialised.
The Serie A side then didn’t open the exit door even though Newcastle United were ready to offer €50m.
Italian still on Newcastle United’s radar
Fast forward to July 2026 and Tutto Atalanta cover the latest on the Premier League side and La Dea’s stance.
The Italian club sold Marco Palestra to Chelsea while Éderson’s move to Manchester United collapsed.
Atalanta have to carry out another major sale this summer, and the 22-year-old seems to be the main candidate for their sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli.
The outlet makes it clear it’s their own information and when discussing Giorgio Scalvini’s suitors, only Newcastle United get a mention.
Encouragement for Newcastle United
Tutto Atalanta claim the interest from the Premier League has been constant, with the Magpies ‘at the forefront’.
Eddie Howe’s side didn’t stop chasing the defender, even though the Italian club didn’t open the exit door initially. That won’t be the case this summer.
Atalanta have appointed Maurizio Sarri as their new manager, and he prefers a back four instead of a three-man defence. Sarri also reportedly wants to reunite with Lazio centre-back Alessio Romagnoli.
Therefore, La Dea are willing to sacrifice Giorgio Scalvini if there’s a bid of around €45m. Their initial plan was to extend his contract beyond 2028.
This should please the Magpies, who are leading the race to sign the Italy international. However, it’s unclear whether Newcastle United are ready to meet the €45m request.
Eddie Howe now has Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian Schär and Dan Burn four centre-backs at his disposal. The latter two are 34 years of age and have contracts lasting until 2027.
