Let Mario wake you up with new Nintendo ‘Alarmo’ clock

Wake up to the sounds of your favourite Nintendo games

Nintendo has announced a new Alarmo alarm clock that will wake you up with music and sound effects from its games like Mario, The Legend of Zeldaand Splatoon.

The Alarmo’s unique selling point, aside from the Nintendo music, is that it can track your movements until you actually get out of bed. It also gets more intense the longer you ignore it and stay in bed.

It tracks your movements using “the reflection of radio waves to measure the distance from and speed of an object,” explained the director of the Alarmo project, Tetsuya Akama, in an interview.

The sound effects the alarm plays are based on your movements as you stir and get up out of bed. You’ll hear coins from Super Mario Oydessyink splats from Splatoon 3, and the chime of rupees from Breath of the Wild. The other game alarms you can set are Pikmin 4 and Ring Fit Adventure.

Once you get out of bed a fanfare also plays to celebrate your achievement and the alarm will stop without you needing to press anything. Each of the five games has seven different alarm scenes you can set which feature varied combinations of music and sounds. If you connect the alarm to the internet, you’ll be able to get more when they’re released as free updates.

Alarmo also keeps a log of your sleep and movement while you’re in bed. If you’re worried about privacy, “unlike cameras, it doesn’t need to film videos, so privacy is better protected compared to cameras,” said Akama. “Since it uses radio waves, it can be used in dark rooms. It can also detect movements even if there are obstacles, as long as the radio waves can pass through.”
