Ireland is braced for days of heavy rain and a drop in temperatures this week.

Most of the country will be hit by the wet weather beginning overnight on Sunday.

This comes after a tornado warning issued for six areas of the UK over the next few days.

Met Eireann said: "Rain will gradually spread northeastwards tonight, becoming lighter and patchier, clear spells and showers will follow from the southwest later.

"Lowest temperatures 9 to 13 degrees in light to moderate south to southeast winds."

They added: "Sunny spells and scattered showers tomorrow, some heavy. Highest temperatures 14 to 17 degrees in light to moderate southeasterly winds."

The rain will continue across Ireland on Monday and Tuesday with the mercury set to drop to 9 degrees.

Met.ie said: "Clear spells and showers at first on Monday night. Outbreaks of rain will spread across the eastern half of the country later, possibly turning heavy in places.

"Lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in light to moderate easterly winds, freshening on eastern coasts later.

"Cloudy with outbreaks of rain over the eastern half of the country on Tuesday. It will be brighter further west with sunny spells and showers, some of which may turn heavy. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in light to moderate northeasterly winds.

"A mainly cloudy night Tuesday night with scattered outbreaks of rain. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate northerly winds."

People in the United Kingdom have been given a tornado warning affecting six areas as hail and lightning are also set to hit the country this afternoon and evening.

The UK is expected to be battered from the high winds that could reach 50mph later today and in the stormy conditions there could be 1cm wide hailstones mixed in with heavy rain. The storm clouds are moving in from the Atlantic into the southwest and moving across the country according to satellite images.

And the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation states that small isolated tornadoes are possible with the winds building in six regions covering central and southern England.

It says: "A shortwave trough will move ENE this afternoon/evening, accompanied by areas of showery rain, some convective in nature. One or more small-scale circulations (mesolows) may evolve, although model guidance differs somewhat on the exact morphology.

"Gusty winds, hail (perhaps up to 1cm diameter), and occasional CG lightning may accompany the stronger cores. Additionally, isolated tornadoes are possible, especially if any mesolows form. Any such mesolows would produce a more focussed risk corridor for gusty winds and occasional tornadoes."
