Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of thunderstorms, flooding and hail as temperatures dip

Our week of sunshine and hot temperatures is coming to an end as autumn will be settling in for good with thunderstorms, flooding, hail and more expected in the coming days

Met Eireann have warned of grim conditions for the next few days as thunderstorms, downpours, hail and flooding are on the cards.

While there will be sunny spells, autumn is well and truly here as the temperatures will be taking a dip to seven degrees in the coming days.

The national forecaster has shared their predictions for the rest of the weekend and most of next week.

According to Met Eireann, it's time to wrap up warm and get the raincoat out after this week's sunny weather.

Here's everything you need to know about the weather forecast for the days ahead.

Saturday 21st September

Mist and fog patches will gradually clear and the cloud will break up to allow some sunny spells to develop. Later in the day, showers will move in from the east and south to affect parts of Leinster and Munster mainly, some heavy with a few thunderstorms possible and spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees with light to moderate northeasterly breezes.

Tonight, scattered heavy or thundery showers will extend across Munster and Leinster and into eastern and southern parts of Connacht and Ulster. Patches of mist and fog in places also. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees with light to moderate northeast breezes. Towards morning further heavy showers or thunderstorms may move onto the east and southeast coast.

Sunday 22nd September

On Sunday morning, any patches of mist or fog will clear. Sunny spells will develop, the best of these in the northwest. Showers or longer spells of rain will feed in from the east and south, and will progress up over the country during the afternoon and evening. However, the more northern and northwestern parts will stay dry. Some heavy falls or thunderstorms are possible in places with spot flooding, especially in south and east Leinster. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with moderate northeasterly breezes.

On Sunday night, rain will continue in the south Leinster and Munster, but will clear to the south overnight. The rest of the country will be dry with clear spells further north. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 12 degrees with light northerly breezes and some patches of mist and fog developing.

Monday 23rd September

Monday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells. A few showers will push down from the north on light northerly breezes. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees. Monday night will start off mainly dry. Later in the night, cloud and showery rain will move into Ulster, while it will remains dry further south with some clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with light northwest to west breezes.

Tuesday 24th September

Tuesday will be a cool, bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with light to moderate west to northwest breezes. On Tuesday night, rain will develop in the south.

Wednesday 25th September

Wednesday will start off dull in the south with outbreaks of rain, which will gradually clear southwards. Much of the country will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and a few isolated showers. Cool with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees and moderate northerly breezes.

Thursday 26th September

Thursday will be a cool, fresh day with sunshine and showers, some heavy with hail and isolated thunderstorms possible. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with light to moderate northerly breezes.

Friday 27th September

Friday will continue cool with sunny spells and further showers. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with moderate west to northwest winds.
