Marks and Spencer ‘coatigan’ is the perfect layering piece for autumn

A coatigan is great for people that don’t want to be weighed down by heavy jackets, but also want to be protected against those biting Irish winds that pop up during the autumn

The in-between weather in Ireland can be tricky to dress for as it can be too warm for a proper coat and too cold to go without one - enter the coatigan.

The coatigan is the perfect layering piece of the autumn season as it’s light enough that you can wear a jumper underneath for some extra warmth, but also warm enough that you won’t be struck down by a good chilling breeze while wearing it on its own.

Marks and Spencer are selling their Textured Buckle Coat, which makes for a great coatigan as it is “very warm but not heavy to wear”, one shopper said.

It costs €105 and comes in two colours - natural beige and dark chocolate. It can be picked up in sizes six to 24.

The coat is hugely popular at the moment, with the new piece getting a rating of 4.6 stars baked on 41 reviews.

One person wrote: “I bought the camel colour as I felt it was more striking. This is an unusual take on a duffel which is what caught my eye. The coat is very warm but not heavy to wear. The fastenings are secure and easy to close/open. Very stylish.”

A second shopper said: “I love this coat. It is also very very warm! Have had loads of comments and if I can keep out of my 22 year old daughter's wardrobe it'll be a miracle. Fantastic price and quality.”

A third reviewer shared: “Absolutely delighted with this item. Fantastic for wearing layers underneath on those much colder days. True to size as supposed to be oversized. I could of gone down a size but I like to wear chunky jumpers in the winter time.”

With another commenter adding: “Love this coat. The length is good. It is quite thick but not heavy. Roomy enough for a thick sweater underneath. As well as the toggles it has studs for fastening. I got the chocolate and it is a lovely rich colour and feels soft. Very nicely made, I am pleased with my purchase.”
