Alan Titchmarsh says 'nobody should be without' this stunning tree that blooms all winter

Alan Titchmarsh has recommended a garden addition that he believes "nobody should be without". As the UK is enveloped in bleak, wintery weather, our cherished gardens are appearing somewhat barren. The vibrant summer blooms have faded away, and patios once pristine are now strewn with moss and fallen leaves.

This time of year calls for many plants to be pruned or brought indoors to shield them from the impending frost - or to stimulate blooming next year. However, the renowned TV gardener has praised a relatively unknown tree that promises to inject some colour back into your garden.

It's easy to care for, visually striking, and can even accommodate a small backyard. Meet the autumn-flowering cherry Prunus subhirtella, 'Autumnalis'.

The idea of cherry blossoms in November might seem like the punchline to a terrible dad joke, but the Autumnalis thrives when all other flowering cherries have entered dormancy. "Right now, that blossom is displayed on bare branches that beautifully contrast against a clear blue sky," Alan penned in his column for the Mirror.

"The individual flowers may be creamy white or, in my favourite variety 'Autumnalis Rosea', a delicate shade of pink, creating an overall effect reminiscent of coconut ice." The tree is best planted at the back of a border or in a lawn, with bulbs at its base. Alan suggests dwarf narcissus such as 'Tete-a-tete' for a stunning display in Spring 2025.

Although harsh frosts may temporarily halt the tree's flowering, it will soon resume and start to open its buds again.

"Planted now, in soil enriched with plenty of organic matter, you can sit back and enjoy the immediate impact of the autumn cherry," Alan said. "You don't need to worry about pruning. Just snip out a few stems in the tree's youth to keep it shapely and evenly canopied."

"Just let it cheer you up each autumn and winter. I can think of few small trees that are so easy to care for and so reliable at brightening the seasonal garden. Everyone should have one."

If you're interested in planting this colourful tree, check your local garden centre or online retailers. It might not look particularly interesting in summer, but it's sure to brighten your garden all winter long.
