The Met Office is warning that temperatures are set to fall significantly in the coming days due to cold Arctic air sweeping across the country. The Exeter-based experts say that overnight frosts are due, with temperatures set to plummet on Thursday.

The cold Arctic air will start making its way over the north of the UK from Wednesday onwards, covering the whole country and reaching southern England by Thursday. Cold winds will also make it feel even chillier.

"It will be turning colder mid-week as the area of low pressure currently across the UK moves away towards the continent. This will open the door to colder northerly winds bringing below average temperatures for most by Thursday," said a tweet by Met Office, accompanied by a graphic depicting Arctic air sweeping across the UK.

On the Met Office's forecast for Wednesday, it says: "Cloudy with outbreaks of rain in the north east. Some sunny spells elsewhere with scattered showers. Turning increasingly windy through the day, particularly along the east coast."

On Thursday, it says: "Colder from Thursday with overnight frosts. Largely dry with sunny spells across parts of the south, although some showers still possible. Cloudier in the north with frequent scattered showers."

Temperatures are anticipated to drop to as low as 3C in northern Scotland towards the end of the week. Temperatures are only expected to be a couple of degrees higher in the Midland and South West, but should be a little higher in the South East of England.
