Dazzling Michelin Devon restaurant where the food is a show of its own

The menu is full of amazing looking creations

Devon boasts an exceptional eatery that has caught the attention of the Michelin Guide for the second consecutive year. Known for being an ideal spot for a pre-theatre meal, this restaurant sits conveniently near Theatre Royal Plymouth.

In 2018, the notable chef Fletcher Andrews, who once led the kitchen at the prestigious Treby Arms, opened the doors of Fletcher's in the heart of Plymouth city centre; a remarkable feat considering he was only 23 at the time. Patrons rave about the place, frequently using words like "wonderful" and "fantastic" to describe their experiences in online reviews, which naturally piqued my curiosity to give it a shot.

Apart from its lofty commendations, what really sets this restaurant apart is the warm welcome that greets you the moment you step through the door there is no hint of pretentiousness, something I particularly admire. The relaxed atmosphere enveloped me as we were seated and I couldn't help but be impressed by the outstanding service.

There was soft lighting and the venue had a cosy feel, the chairs were also really comfy. I chose one glass of the “easy drinking” Italian wine and it was a really good one.

The menu was full of amazing looking creations, this is the kind of food that’s also a work of art - and you just know it’s going to be super tasty. I’d love to be able to cook that well - huge compliments to the chef.

After some speculation, I chose the chicken balti starter - from the specials of the evening. My companion chose the pigeon wellington (with squash puree, pickled blackberry and red wine jus) - as he’d never tasted pigeon before.

That’s why treating yourself occasionally to a meal like this is really nice as you get to try tastes you have not yet experienced. Each course has a depth of flavour and so much going on, but at the same time each part compliments the others.

It was a really memorable meal, it’s a great place to go to celebrate good food and life - and living in Plymouth. It’s a great place to go pre-theatre, but if you haven’t tried Fletchers yet I’d highly recommend it - as the food is a show of its own.

Our dinner for two came to £100 exactly - which surprised me as I thought it would be more. I felt that was very reasonable for the quality here.

The menu regularly changes and they use a lot of local ingredients which makes the experience even more special.

Pan fried local fish

The main dish I chose was the pan fried market fish (sea bass) with kohlrabi salad, blood orange, kohlrabi fondant and chervil sauce. It was exceptional and there was nothing wasted, I ate every drop of the sauce - it was so tasty.(Image: Katie Oborn)

Pork belly main

My companion chose the slow cooked pork belly and a pork croquette with celeriac puree and charred spring onion, which he said was equally delicious - and of course the presentation was absolutely stunning for all the dishes.(Image: Katie Oborn)
