Follow plumber's three simple ways to get radiators 'hotter and heating up faster' this winter
by Steffan Rhys, Angela Patrone · DevonLiveDuring the colder months, when temperatures plummet to single digits, heating your home efficiently and sufficiently is crucial. No one wants a cold home, so what steps can you take if you find your radiators not providing warmth?
Fortunately, there are three easy procedures to help fix your radiator issues promptly, ensuring that they heat your home efficiently and without increasing your energy bills, reports the Express.
Most radiator issues stem from simple problems and, quite surprisingly, do not usually require the services of a plumber for resolution. Plumber Zhelyazko Yanchev, from Fantastic Services, pointed out that "plenty of ways to make radiators hotter, and heat up faster, without buying a new boiler and using expensive or specialist tools" exist. He also remarked: "Hot water radiator systems are very simple and the problems are likely as simple, too."
1. Clean and clear around radiators
Regarding improving radiator efficiency, the plumbing expert suggests the "fastest and cheapest way" is to keep the space around them clear. Zhelyazko explained: "That's because radiators work on the principle that hot air rises by natural convection. Cold air is drawn up the radiator at the bottom and rises out warm at the top."
Clutter on or near the radiator can hinder this airflow process, hence it's essential to keep the area around your radiators clutter-free. To ensure optimal efficiency and performance, radiators require regular dusting to maintain proper airflow. When large clumps of dust and lint accumulate, they can obstruct the centre of the radiator, leading to decreased heating effectiveness.
2. Bleed your radiators
If you notice that your radiator is cold at the top but hot at the bottom, it’s due to “air trapped inside”. The air essentially takes up the space where hot water should be. The expert advised: "You can quickly increase the radiator's performance by bleeding this air out."
3. Remove radiator sludge
Furthermore, there might be situations where households find their radiator hot at the top but cold at the bottom, which is usually a sign of sludge buildup inside the radiator. This sludge comprises rust, dirt, and scale that collects over time and circulates within the heating system.
Not only is sludge a common reason for boiler malfunctions, but it can also significantly reduce the lifespan of your system, necessitating prompt action to resolve the issue.
