People Are Sharing The Worst Modern Trends That Should Have Disappeared Yesterday

by · BuzzFeed

Trends come and go, but the bad ones feel like they stick around all too long. So redditor u/Western_Definition80 asked, "What's a trend you're totally disappointed with?" Here's what people said about modern-day trends spanning everything from tech and fashion to food and more.

1. "A lack of color in home decor. Everything is #sadbeige. Maybe a pillow is dusty pink if you want to add some spice."

2. "Everything has to be a video now. Gone are the days of googling quick solutions; now everything is a 10-minute video with a three-minute intro, five minutes of irrelevant conversation, one minute about what you were googling, and a one-minute ending of 'like and subscribe!'"

3. "Those microscopic luxury bags that can't even fit a phone inside."

4. "Subscriptions. Everything that was once a one-time purchase has become a monthly subscription. It feels like we’re not allowed to own anything outright anymore."

5. "How difficult it has become to just play a video game. When I was a kid, I could actually play a game within two minutes of opening it..."

"...Now, my boys spend half of Christmas just downloading whatever ridiculous updates are necessary to get the game to where you can even get into it. THEN you need to wait forever for all the loading screens. Then, you need to create an account to be able to log into the game (so they can hit you up for money later). THEN you need to (apparently) spend 20–30 minutes 'setting up' the game. And finally, one day, you can actually play...after a 10-minute loading screen. At this point, I don't care about the graphics. I just want to pop in some old game and be able to enjoy it!"

6. "Sports gambling. Every other billboard is a sports gambling billboard, and I can't believe that these many people are actively gambling on sporting events in this capacity."

7. "The food trend of adding cottage cheese to everything. It's okay to have bread and for it to not have 72 grams of protein in it."

8. "Plastic surgery, in particular buccal fat removal. It's out of control, and it's making so many female celebrities look 10–20 years older than they are."

9. "How there's an app for EVERYTHING. Even to order at fast food or grocery stores, multiple items and deals are 'app only.' It's so damn annoying."

10. "Wearing high white socks with shorts. It's so popular now, but I can only picture my 60-year-old parents, who have no fashion sense when I see it."

11. "I'm totally disappointed with the trend of planned obsolescence in tech. Companies are making devices that intentionally slow down or break after a few years, so you must buy a new one."

12. "Minimalist home decor that makes it look like no one actually lives there."

13. "Everything is behind a stupid paywall now, and you have to pay a significant amount just to get a little more from the service. 😭"

14. "Self checkouts, which are minimizing the number of employees at stores so that places like CVS and Rite Aid — that used to have human interaction — are now depressing ghost stores."

15. "The way that people do dangerous things online for engagement. I didn't realize how bad it really was until I started using TikTok."

16. "Hamburgers that are so high you can't actually eat them easily. If you want a bigger hamburger, I think you should make it bigger in circumference, not higher. Tall ones are difficult and messy to eat."

17. "Eyebrow culture is just wild to me. I do not understand the individual eyebrow hairs glued straight against the forehead. It looks super odd."

u/Melalemon

18. "Wedding culture has gotten out of control. As a guest, you’re expected to shell out big bucks to attend (hotel, etc.) AND for the bachelor/bachelorette party. And then there's a separate bridal shower where you're expected to buy a gift from the registry. Plus, more and more of these events are involving travel! It feels like an abuse of social norms to try and squeeze people like this."

19. "Modern farmhouse style. I am so sick of seeing white with black trim everywhere and endless expenses of gray."

20. "Botox, fillers, and plastic surgery are becoming so normalized now. People that are aging normally and now being told they are aging terribly because they aren't using Botox."
