People are waking up to the reality that permanent Daylight Saving Time might actually become law after the House passed the "Sunshine Protection Act." These same people are also waking up to the tradeoff: sunrises after 8 a.m. for much of the year or one measly extra hour of evening light in the dark of winter.
From morning runners to terrified parents, here are 24 tweets from people pointing out why permanent Daylight Saving Time is actually a horrible, dark idea!!
1. First off, meteorologist Pat Cavlin said, "It’s comical how no one understands that we already did this in 1974. It ended up being SUCH a bad idea that it only lasted 10 months before it was quickly changed back."
2. "If year round Daylight Saving Time was adopted, roughly 87% of the contiguous urban population (or ~70% of the total population) of the United States would experience a sunrise after 8am in the winter. Currently that figure is 3% of the contiguous urban population."
9. "It’s genuinely heartening to see how many people have taken up the mantle against the corrupt Florida boomer lazy golfing class that wants to doom productive people to blackness with permanent DST."
12. "Stupid, stupid bill. Kids in northern states, particularly in places further east in their time zones, will be walking and waiting for the morning bus in the dark."
14. "I understand that people dislike early sunsets, but from a biological, Circadian rhythm perspective, having morning sunlight close to the time you wake up is the most important thing you can do. Having later sunrises in the winter is not a good thing."
15. "If daylight savings time becomes permanent in Miami… you’re telling me the sun won’t rise until 8:09am? brutal. by that time, I’ve gone to the gym, did a class workout, drove 30 minutes to work & sometimes already started a 7:45am meeting now without the sun out? Gimme a 7am sunrise."
18. "I’m so sorry but if you think your season depression is going to get better because it’s light until 5:30-6 pm instead of 4:30 for two months out of the year, but will instead be dark until almost 9 am you’re mistaken."
19. "The trade group representing major U.S. airlines says the House-passed bill making Daylight Saving Time permanent 'would have considerable implications for aviation,' including 'passenger disruption' and problems with domestic and international flight connections."
20. "July 4 fireworks are a perfect example of why we shouldn’t have DST in the first place The sun not going fully down until 930pm and having to wait around until after 10 for them to be done is BONKERS."
