So, now, let's get into the situation at hand: "I left a ham to defrost overnight and came back to this being shredded up…It was a large ham, so to throw it all away sucks," they said.

In order of importance, let's address the cats' safety first. Excessive salt intake is really bad for cats.

And people can attest to this.

So, giving the cats lots of water is CRUCIAL.

This deserves a call or visit to the vet, IMO.

Second, if they ate parts of the string, this also deserves a vet call or visit.

The string is, like, a big cause for concern.

So, the salt is bad, and the string is also bad.

Moving on to the next concern: DEFROSTING THE HAM.

This is actually not a great idea.

You shouldn't thaw meat on the counter. You should thaw it in the fridge.

So, it is not worth salvaging due to possible bacteria exposure and also because the cats' paws likely aren't the cleanest.
