The Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper, in his recurring segment “Fingers on the Pulse,” asked supporters of President Donald Trump to define communism, and the results were... mixed.

Many of those Klepper spoke with outside various Trump midterm rallies said a core issue for them heading into November was “socialism” and “communism” creeping into American society.

But when asked to define those terms, many said they couldn’t give Klepper an exact definition. “That’s a hard term, you know,” one man responded.

“It is a hard term. It’s just almost easier just to throw it out, incite some fear, and then move on,” Klepper replied. “Yeah. I probably really couldn’t give you a definition,” the man said.

Others stayed silent, while others said they’ve been free their whole lives in the US, and they don’t want that to change. Another man said communism is when “they’re gonna control you.” One couple seemed stunned by Klepper’s line of questioning, simply replying that the US is the greatest country in the world.

Klepper then asked the people about government handouts, especially in light of the president’s promise to pay every American $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms.

“You don’t like the handouts?” Klepper asked one woman. “No. There’s some people that need help, but we got too many people who shouldn’t be on it,” the woman replied.

“What about for $5,000 checks if Republicans win? What do you think of that?” Klepper asked. “I think that’d be great,” she said.

The couple Klepper spoke to earlier said they don’t want all the “free stuff,” but they were excited about the $5,000 checks.

However, one man stood out from the pack when asked about the potential payments. “I’m not sure I like that,” the man said.

“Why don’t you like it?” Klepper said. “Because it looks like he’s paying people to vote for him,” the man said.

“It does look like that,” Klepper said.
