UK’s global role in AI safety ‘not diminished’ by Trump, says AI minister – POLITICO

LIVERPOOL, England — The U.K.’s ability to take a global lead on AI safety is “not diminished in the slightest” by the Trump administration's positioning on the technology, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan told the POLITICO Pub at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool.

Last week at the U.N. General Assembly President Donald Trump said the U.S. would reject any attempts at global regulation for AI, and POLITICO reported that the White House told AI firms OpenAI and Anthropic not to hand their models over to the U.K.'s AI Security Institute until U.S. testers were done looking at them.

But Narayan said so long as AISI gets to test models before they're rolled out in the wider world, it doesn't matter if the U.S. gets “first dibs.”
