Winter wonderland: Whistler Blackcomb sees snow Friday

by · CityNews

Whistler Blackcomb isn’t set to open for the season until Nov. 22, but the mountains have already started seeing some snow.

The ski resort saw isolated flurries Friday, with its website showing a centimetre of snow Friday and another centimetre expected overnight.

“Not uncommon this time of year and we’re hoping the trend continues, in order to help set us up for a successful opening day for the winter 2024/24 season, which is planned for Nov. 22,” Dane Gergovich, senior manager of communications for Vail Resorts, told 1130 NewsRadio.

This isn’t the first snow of the season in the area; Gergovich says it had its first dusting of snow in August, and there have been a few since.

No further snow is showing in the forecast for the weekend.

The resort posted pictures to social media showing fresh powder on the ground and snow falling around the ski lifts.

The resort struggled with a lack of snow last year, with several posts on social media in December discussing how poor the conditions were. By Dec. 21, a month after the resort opened, it had only opened 38 per cent of its terrain, with just 106 out of 276 trails open and 19 of 27 lifts operating.
