American TV personality Courtney Stodden and her ex-husband Doug Hutchison had one of the most controversial relationships. The pair got married in 2011, when Courtney was only 16 years old, and Hutchison was 51. The ex-pair drew criticism due to their 34-year age gap. Courtney Stodden, according to social media reports, had spoken about the reason behind her divorce. She revealed that her relationship had a lot of control and emotional abuse, but Hutchison had denied all the claims. Stodden, in an interview with E! Online, revealed why she decided to end her marriage to the man who was her soul mate. In her words:

"I want to be free and embrace my independence and not neglect my youth."

Courtney Stodden's representative had also released a statement that after two and a half years of marriage, Courtney and Doug had decided to become legally separated. This was a mutual and amicable decision that they're making together. Reportedly, the 34-year age gap was also another reason for the separation, as the representative had noted:

"As you know, Courtney was married at a young age. Now, at nineteen, she's interested in exploring life as an unmarried single young adult—with the freedom to explore her independence."

For the unversed, Courtney and Hutchison's relationship started when the actor contacted her about acting classes. It was Stodden's mom who used to manage her career when she was young. Both of them had married in Nevada with parental consent and were also seen in many reality shows.

The couple's relationship first began after Stodden contacted Hutchison regarding acting classes while Stodden's mother managed their early career. They married in Nevada with parental consent, instantly becoming tabloid fixtures and appearing on several reality television shows. At the time, both defended their relationship against criticism, insisting their marriage was built on genuine love.

Redditors felt that people were brutal towards Courtney. A user had said, "From my perspective, "the public" was brutal towards Courtney. They mocked Courtney and commented on their body as if nothing was wrong with judging a kid. Instead of going after the grown-ass man, they went for the kid instead."

The user further commented, "They both came under plenty of fire (not just her). If you watch any of the interviews back when they got married, all of the criticism was directed at Doug, and the interviewers only asked Courtney if she was sure this is what she wanted."

Social media made theories that Courtney was bullied for marrying at a very young age. A user had shared that at the age of 16, one does not really enjoy being condescended to and tends to rebel in that situation. It is worth noting that the ex-pair had reconciled in 2014 and had also renewed their vows in 2016. It was by March 2017 that they had separated.

A comment referring to Courtney read, "And if her parents are going to let her get married, then all the rest of us can really do is just sit back and wait for her to come around and then give her support when she needs it. And again, because I think it bears repeating, it is not ok that she was bullied or harassed online. I don’t think it’s even ok to do that, but especially when it’s an underage person."
