Russian Plane With 87 Passengers Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Catches Fire Mid-Air

A Russian Azimuth Airlines flight carrying 87 passengers and four crew members made an emergency landing at Antalya Airport, Turkey, on Sunday after its left engine caught fire.

The Sukhoi SuperJet 100-95LR had departed from Sochi, Russia, and landed safely despite the fire.

Emergency crews promptly extinguished the flames, and all passengers and crew evacuated without injuries.

The incident occurred amid challenging weather conditions, with the aircraft touching down on runway 36R at 9:30 PM TRT. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

“All 87 passengers and four crew members were safely evacuated,” said the official, Suat Seyitoglu, as quoted by The Moscow Times, adding that the fire was quickly put out and there were no injuries.

In a separate incident on Monday, November 25, 2024, a DHL cargo plane operated by Swiftair crashed in Vilnius, Lithuania, killing one person and injuring two others.

The aircraft, en route from Leipzig, Germany, to Vilnius Airport, went down near a residential area in Liepkalnis at around 5:30 AM local time.

Tragically, one pilot lost their life, while the second pilot and two DHL employees onboard survived with injuries.

A fire broke out at the crash site, but residents of the affected area were safely evacuated.

Lithuanian authorities confirmed that the plane struck the yard of a house rather than the building itself, preventing further casualties.

“City services are currently onsite, along with a fire truck and a command team from Vilnius Airport.

“Airport operations are not disrupted at this time,” the Lithuanian airport authority posted on X.

The crash did not disrupt airport operations, and investigations are underway to determine the cause.
