Tottenham’s Relegation Battle Worsen After Awoniyi’s Winner [Premier League Results]

by · Naija News

Tottenham Hotspur slid deeper into trouble as Nottingham Forest claimed a ruthless 3-0 Premier League win in North London, with Taiwo Awoniyi sealing the result late on.

The defeat leaves Tottenham Hotspur hovering just a point above the drop zone after another bleak afternoon, while Forest climb to 16th, now three points clear of danger.

Igor Jesus headed Tottenham Hotspur in front in first-half stoppage time, making amends after an earlier defensive scare. Spurs had controlled large spells but failed to turn pressure into goals, with Mathys Tel rattling the bar before the break.

Morgan Gibbs-White doubled the lead in the 62nd minute as he was left unmarked to convert from close range after a sharp cutback. Spurs never recovered. Awoniyi then added a third in the 87th minute to complete a damaging defeat.

It was Forest’s first Premier League win under Vitor Pereira and could prove decisive in their survival push. The defeat means that Tottenham are winless in the EPL since late December and have lost six of their last seven matches.

Pressure is mounting on interim boss Igor Tudor, who has now suffered five defeats in seven games in charge.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa boosted their Champions League hopes with a 2-0 win over West Ham United. Ollie Watkins ended his goal drought, while John McGinn opened the scoring.

In the Tyne-Wear derby, Sunderland stunned Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park. Brian Brobbey struck a dramatic late winner to secure a famous away victory.
