DMH warns of strong afternoon and evening winds in May due to unstable air and rising temperatures

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has warned that strong winds may occur during the afternoons and evenings starting in May, driven by unstable atmospheric conditions and rising daytime temperatures.

Across Myanmar, the period before the southwest monsoon brings unstable air. Combined with increasing heat, this leads to the formation of thermal convection clouds and rain clouds later in the day. As a result, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, and strong winds are likely, with wind speeds over land and sea potentially reaching 40 to 50 mph.

DMH has urged the public to remain vigilant during the pre-monsoon season—from May until the arrival of the southwest monsoon—and to take necessary precautions, particularly for domestic flights and sea travel.

On the afternoon of April 30, strong winds in Yangon caused trees to fall onto houses in several townships.
