Keeping warm during outdoor activities is usually a relatively straightforward affair.
You put on a fleece jacket and a waterproof shell, and you're good to go.
However, staying warm without overheating when you're constantly switching between high-intensity activities and rest is more complicated.

Polartec set out to solve this problem when it originally developed its Alpha insulation for military personnel operating in demanding environments.
Now, more than a decade later, the American textile specialist has introduced the next generation of Polartec Alpha.
It promises improved durability, greater design flexibility and the same exceptional breathability that made the original material popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
And some big names are already getting involved, including Patagonia, Goldwin and Purple Mountain Observatory.

From military technology to everyday outerwear
Unlike traditional synthetic insulation, which generally prioritises trapping heat, Polartec Alpha uses an open construction that allows air to circulate through the material.
This helps excess heat and moisture escape during strenuous activities, reducing the need to constantly remove and replace layers as your intensity changes.
It's particularly useful for activities such as hiking, trail running and cycling, where conditions and exertion levels can fluctuate considerably.
The original Alpha was designed primarily as an insulating layer sandwiched between other fabrics, but outdoor brands have increasingly started using the material in more exposed applications.
To address this, Polartec has developed a new patent-pending construction that improves the fabric's structural integrity, making it more resistant to snagging and shedding.
Crucially, the company claims these improvements don't compromise the material's lightweight warmth, breathability, compressibility or ability to regulate temperature.
The updated Alpha is also available in a broader selection of weights, textures and constructions, giving designers more freedom to create everything from technical outdoor clothing to lifestyle pieces.
According to Polartec, the development took more than four years of collaboration, prototyping and testing with performance apparel brands.
A new generation of technical fleece
One of the first examples of the technology is the Polartec Alpha Wool Hoodie from Purple Mountain Observatory.
The striking green hoodie combines the latest Alpha Wool construction with a blend of 54% recycled polyester, 40% wool and 6% nylon.
The wool adds natural temperature-regulating properties, while the synthetic fibres help manage moisture and maintain the material's lightweight performance.
Weighing 300g, the hoodie features a relaxed fit, elasticated cuffs, an adjustable-coverage hood opening and integrated thumb loops.
It's also a good example of how technical insulation is increasingly becoming a visible part of outdoor fashion rather than being tucked away.
Purple Mountain Observatory certainly isn't alone. Polartec says more than 11 brands are preparing products featuring the updated insulation, including Ornot, Senchi Designs, Farpointe and Goldwin.
Patagonia is also preparing an exclusive style using the new material, scheduled to arrive in November 2026.
The Polartec Alpha Wool Hoodie is available now at Purple Mountain Observatory for £220 / $345 / €266 / AU$425.
