Scarlett Johansson Says Batman Role Gave Her ‘a Lot of Existential Angst’
by Bethy Squires · VULTUREIt has been a tough road making The Batman: Part II. Director Matt Reeves had to leave the film for a “family matter” with Steven Soderbergh coming in to finish principal photography. Now, Scarlett Johansson is saying her role in the film was one of her most difficult to date. When asked by Entertainment Tonight which of her upcoming projects pushed her out of her comfort zone, Scarjo replied, “Probably the role in The Batman. It gave me a lot of existential angst for some reason.”
“It was very hard to figure out,” she continued. I don’t know why, whether it was just the role, or was just where I am in my life, or what’s going on, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it. It was a tough role in a lot of ways.” Johansson’s Batman role hasn’t been officially revealed, though some speculation suggests she’ll be playing Gilda Dent — wife of Harvey Dent, a.k.a. Two-Face. Part of Harvey’s descent into madness and the Two-Face persona comes from how he can’t accept that Gilda loves him even though he has an acid-burned face. In The Long Halloween, Gilda goes on a holiday-themed killing rampage, which could be fun to act out. Other actors joining The Batman: Part II in roles TBA include Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, and Charles Dance.
