Celebrate Cuffing Season With the Pride and Prejudice Miniseries
by Jason P. Frank · VULTUREThe air is changing, the leaves are falling, and your cousin is posting about “spoopy season” online. That means it’s almost time for Jane Austen. Netflix’s upcoming Pride and Prejudice miniseries is there to quell that urge (if the recent Sense and Sensibility film didn’t already). The upcoming series’ trailer reintroduces the Bennet girls. “Home is noisy and somewhat chaotic,” Emma Corrin’s Lizzie Bennet says. “I am one of five sisters and a very animated mother.” Then it cuts to Olivia Colman’s Mrs. Bennet shouting the words “Mr. Bennet!” as she crosses the yard. Those Bennets will joined by Mary (Hopey Parish), Kitty (Hollie Avery), Lydia (Rhea Norwood), and Jane (Freya Mavor), along with Slow Horses star (and potential Bond) Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy.
The adaptation was written by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and directed by Heartstopper mainstay Euros Lyn. It features Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, Louis Partridge as Mr. Wickham, and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. “I got an email asking if I’d be interested in adapting Pride and Prejudice and my immediate response was, ‘I absolutely cannot do this. This is everyone’s favorite book. It’s too much responsibility,’” Alderton told Tudum. “I thought of all the things that could go wrong, and then I put that all in a box. Since then, I’ve just thought about the honor and the privilege of being entrusted with this story.” See if it lives up to the source material when the newest version debuts on December 3.
