CBS News Finally Airs 60 Minutes Story on CECOT

It’s the 60 Minutes segment Bari Weiss reportedly didn’t want you to see. On January 18, 60 Minutes finally aired the story on Salvadoran prison CECOT, where hundreds of Venezuelan migrants are being detained. The segment — which was pulled for “additional reporting” and previously leaked by Canada’s Global News — aired with a pointed preamble Sunday night. “Since November, 60 Minutes has made several attempts to interview key Trump administration officials on camera about our story,” host Sharyn Alfonsi said. “They declined our request.”

In December, CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss pulled the segment, three hours before it was supposed to air. The network said at the time that it “needed additional reporting.” The New York Times wrote that Weiss wanted an interview with White House deputy chief of staff and homeland security adviser Stephen Miller or someone similarly high up in the Trump admin to give their side of the story. “CBS News leadership has always been committed to airing the 60 MINUTES CECOT piece as soon as it was ready. Tonight, viewers get to see it, along with other important stories,” the network said in a statement obtained by Reuters Sunday.
