Martin Short Just Wanted a Nibble of Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s Wedding Cake

Oliver no! Sweet treat lover Martin Short accidentally cut into Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding cake a little bit too early — like before the bride and groom had a chance to take pictures with it early. “There was a wedding cake in our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back,” Short told Jimmy Kimmel on January 21. “So after a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet, Steve [Martin] said he was going to leave.” Of course, they’re at a wedding, and Short had a cocktail so he invited Martin to have a slice of cake before he left. He told Martin, “‘You can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake.’ And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it on the other, and then all the people in our group scream, ‘Marty!’” The cake that was near their section was the main wedding cake for Blanco and Gomez.

“I tried to fix it with a fork,” Short explained as Kimmel showed a photo of the cut cake. “This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, ‘So, do we just leave?’” Thankfully, the chef was able to fix it up, or at least angle it right for the photos. “Then they did surgery, but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake, and that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done,” Short joked. 

Gomez still laughed at the memory to this day, adding on Instagram, “True story. Marty cut our cake FIRST.”
