Olivia Rodrigo Wouldn’t Mind Working with Sabrina Carpenter

by · VULTURE

Disney Channel gals got to stay together. Five years after the release of “Driver’s License,” a song many believe is about Sabrina Carpenter and Joshua Bassett’s former relationship, it seems like Olivia Rodrigo and Carpenter have let the past be the past. In her cover story with Dazed, Rodrigo says she wouldn’t mind working with the “Manchild” singer. When asked if she would ever collaborate with Carpenter, Rodrigo said, “Oh, gosh. I mean, I’m open… I’m open to all types of collaboration.” Over the years, they’ve been spotted making small talk at award shows, going to the same concerts, and hanging out at Paul McCartney’s house. So, who’s to say the next step wouldn’t be making a song together?

In “Driver’s License,” Rodrigo sings about her ex leaving her for a “blonde girl” who’s older than her. At the time, the former HSMTMTS stars had been broken up for a while, and Bassett moved on with Carpenter. A few weeks later, Carpenter released a song called “Skin” that alluded to Rodrigo’s hit song that caused fans to attack her. “Maybe then we could pretend/There’s no gravity in the words we write/Maybe you didn’t mean it/Maybe blonde was the only rhyme,” she sang. Carpenter eventually wrote another song about the hate she received at the time called “Because I Liked a Boy.” It seems like after a few years, both women buried the songwriting hatchet and can focus on more important things, like hanging out with Paul McCartney.
