Is Madonna Yearning for Her ‘Bizarre’ Relationship to Sean Penn?

by · VULTURE

Madonna’s in a yearning mood. In her new song “Bizarre,” it looks like she’s reflecting on her relationship with Sean Penn from her late 20s. She sings about a hot-and-cold relationship, wondering whether her “blue-eyed” partner was jealous of her rising stardom. “Roll out the carpet for us but you won’t share it/I guess you’re threatened by me, you won’t admit it,” she sings. “The little things that you did that madе me want you/The fire was so intеnse.” The two married in 1985, when Madonna was 27 years old, and Penn was 25. But despite the tumultuous relationship, one that the Madonna Unauthorized author Christopher Anderson alleged was abusive — she denied the allegations — Madonna seems to still miss the chaos. “Now you’re gone, I feel so empty/Why do you tempt me?” she ponders. She gifted him a Shelby Cobra for their wedding and references it later in the song: “He drove way too fast/Shelby Cobra wasn’t meant to last.”

Madonna and Penn divorced in 1989, but thankfully, the two stayed friends. Penn told The Louis Theroux Podcast last year, “It didn’t take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship. I have a lot of fond memories of it – it’s not all jail.” She attended his 2016 gala, “Sean Penn & Friends: Help Haiti Home,” and they reunited again at another fundraiser, where she told the crowd she would remarry Penn if he bid $150,000 for the cause. Look, if Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck can do it (even if they ended up divorcing again), why not Penn and Madonna? The tension is palpable.
