Sabrina Carpenter Is a Drive-Away Doll
by Jason P. Frank · VULTURETake your shoes off! Sabrina Carpenter released the music video for her song “House Tour” today, and she’s joined by two accomplices: Margaret Qualley, who also co-directed the video with her, and Madelyn Cline. They make a troublesome trio, breaking into and ransacking a house because it’s a fun and flirty thing to do. The house tour is a full party — they jump in the pool, drink wine, and find oodles of cash before fleeing from the police. Like Carpenter’s other videos, “House Tour” really stays on theme. The house is a ’70s-esque marvel and the perfect background for the girls to get flirty, fun, and a little queer. Carpenter wears a men’s suit jacket and squeezes Cline’s butt, and the girls kiss their own reflections. Jane Wickline, eat your heart out.
If “Tears” was The Rocky Horror Picture Show and “Taste” was Death Becomes Her, then “House Tour” is Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s lesbian B-movie thriller, Drive-Away Dolls. Like that movie, “House Tour” stars Qualley, is about women relishing crime, and features bright, multicolored lighting. Based on Carpenter’s movie taste, it does feel like a Thelma & Louise–inspired video is dropping any moment.
The music video comes ahead of Carpenter’s upcoming first headlining Coachella set this weekend. She’s the Friday headliner alongside Justin Bieber and Karol G, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Just two years ago she was making her Coachella debut, billed on the third line from the top. Now she’s vaulted up to the top of the list, no robbery required.
