Al Jardine Wants Mike Love to Catch a Wave to the Retirement Home

Over the weekend, footage that wouldn’t be inaccurately described as Weekend at Bernie’s–esque confirmed the scope of Mike Love’s poor health: The Beach Boys front man was immobile, frail, and barely able to muster out a few syllables at a concert, which came after the band canceled several months’ worth of shows due to Love’s need to “recharge.” Al Jardine, a fellow Beach Boys co-founder who tours in a separate group and has sharply criticized Love’s behavior in the past, is saddened about how his former friend arrived at this point. “Well, yes, it’s shocking and I was really depressed,” he told Rolling Stone about the footage, which also features John Stamos attempting to hype Love up. “I had to really shake myself out of it just to get onstage. Just the optics of it were just awful and I’m speechless.” Jardine hopes Love, who is 85 years old, won’t do more shows in his condition. “That’s just not right, that I can see,” he explained. “Obviously, he’s a total pro. He wants to be onstage, but he just doesn’t know how not to do it. He doesn’t know what else to do, so I think he’s trapped.” Jardine also dismissed the idea of the current Beach Boys, with Stamos and backing musicians, continuing without Love. “Well, you need the lead singers. If you don’t have that, who do you have?” he asked. “I mean, at least I can still sing, so that really helps.” Jardine added, earnestly, “I feel so bad for him. I really do.”
