South Park Is South America Now

Ready to go to South America and see some capybaras annoying tweens? South Park aired its season-29 premiere on September 17, reintroducing the audience to a cartoon world with a few changes. Namely, the place and the show have both been renamed “South America,” as a way of parodying Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. To accompany the name change, the show also altered the title song. “I’m goin’ down to South America, gonna have myself a time,” it now says, cramming those extra syllables in. Additionally, all of the characters now just refer to their hometown as South America without acknowledging a difference. Though it is making fun of him, the premiere does not explicitly mention Trump following his season-28 story line.

Instead, the episode, titled “South American Biker Gangs,” follows rival biking tribes: Randy Marsh’s regular cyclists and Cartman’s e-bikers. As the plot progresses, there are constant digs at Google Maps and Apple Maps for conceding to Trump’s order. After a character gets mad about the e-bikes, a reporter asks, “When you rolled over and sucked a dick with the change in the town name, did you feel any outrage then?” 

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA,” South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said in a statement prior to the episode. “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.” David Ellison — sorry, David America — has yet to respond.
