Jay-Z Files a Second Appeal to Extortion Case

Jay-Z, legal name Shawn Carter, has filed an appeal to the state of California to reconsider an extortion case against Texas attorney Tony Buzbee. Rolling Stone reports that Carter’s original appeal from September 10 was denied by the appellate court, which claimed that Buzbee did not act in bad faith when he represented a Jane Doe who claimed that Carter raped her when she was 13 years old at a VMAs after-party. Now, Carter is submitting a new appeal after Jane Doe fully recanted her claims last week. “Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter. Mr. Carter never engaged in any inappropriate conduct toward me whatsoever,” Jane Doe wrote in a filing to the Manhattan court on September 25. “There is no truth to any of my claims against Mr. Carter. I understand my false accusations have caused Mr. Carter immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone.”

“Jane Doe’s declaration proves that discovery would yield evidence supporting Carter’s claims. Fairness and due process require this court to grant rehearing,” the appeal argues. It also claims the decision relied on Jane Doe’s dropping the lawsuit because of alleged intimidation and hopes the new filing will change the outcome.
