Carly Simon Isn’t Sure She Ever Loved Sweet Baby James
by Devon Ivie · VULTUREWho knows if the fire and rain adequately prepared him for this one. Carly Simon, whose recent Parkinson’s diagnosis didn’t impede her from releasing her first album in 18 years, Comes in Waves, has seemingly dedicated a song to her ex-husband, James Taylor. It’s … not positive. “Maybe I Never Loved You,” a short, confessional track that clocks in at under three minutes, gets straight to the point: “Maybe I never loved you, but anyway, I thought I did / I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something / Maybe I never loved you / Yes, and maybe I did / And maybe you never loved me / Although God knows, you said you did / And maybe it’s best to bury whatever it was we had our fill of.” The couple, who were married from 1972 to 1983, share two children. Simon revealed in her 2015 memoir that they hadn’t talked in decades despite her best efforts, and she expressed hope at the time “to heal” Taylor. People notes that another song from Comes in Waves, “Mother of Pearl,” addresses the impact of their separation on their daughter. (“I can see you at seven, a child of divorce / How can it be that we gave you no choice?”) Still, given that Simon has the nuclear codes for every possible diss track, it could be a lot worse?
