'Nobody can pronounce my child's name - I've explained it several times'

by · Irish Mirror

Picking the right name for your child can be very tricky as all links - celebrity connotations, potential for bullying, past experiences with those with the name - are considered before putting pen to paper on the birth certificate.

There's also the potential for pushback from particular family members who take issue with the name choice or friends who may disagree with the direction parents decide to go when naming their bundle of joy.

Sometimes, parents even decide to just make up a name, though there can be problems with that as one mum found out when she came up with a very unique name choice for her child and now, nobody can pronounce the baby's name.

The Mirror reports that the mum in this case opted to name her child Ehektra, which is "pronounced with an H". Explaining the decision on social media, the mother wrote: "It’s a made-up spelling, I just liked it. My other daughter’s name is Sieanna instead of Sienna."

The name choice has caused quite a stir though because very few people know how to pronounce it. When quizzed again on how exactly to pronounce 'Ehektra', the mum clarified: "With a H, so it’s like 'hh-letra'." This caused even more confusion as someone asked: "I still don’t understand. Eh-heck-tra?" The mum then added: "Yes, but it’s said with an H instead of the E."

Popular Facebook group That name isn’t a tragedeigh, it’s a murghdyrr, which boasts more than 330,000 members, saw the comments section blow up with baffled followers.

One person posted screenshots of the exchange and insisted: "That's not how letters work. Found in 3 different posts from the parent and it's a different pronunciation every time".

Another person lamented: "I still don’t understand, even with all the explanations." To which, someone else replied: "You are not alone", while another Facebook user said: "I came here to say this."

A fourth posted in agreement: "Me either! Like, WHAT is pronounced with an H??" Other group members were equally perplexed. One person simply said: "Still not sure what the name is or supposed to be". Another theorised: "I think they're just bad at spelling AND typing."

One person jokingly asked: "So you're telling me it's perfectly acceptable to name your baby Efghijk and then say it's pronounced Joe?" Another said: "I read this several times and now I am stupider", while one group member quipped: "WHAT the hecktra is even that?"

Another Facebook user said: "Just say your partner picked the name and you don't know how to say it either already, we understand." And another pointed out how many of the mother’s comments didn’t shed any light on how to pronounce the name at all: "The contradictions are just making it harder."

Finally, one person asked if the parent was tricking their fellow social media users: "Are they just trolling?"
