Green Party Co-leader Marama Davidson has apologised for driving over the speed limit.

In a social media post, Davidson wrote she was "snapped" driving 11km/h over the speed limit on State Highway 1 on Sunday.

The post contained a graphic with the words Mō taku hē, which translates to "My bad" or "I'm sorry".

She said she completely accepted the error, and that speed limits were there for a reason.

"I completely accept this was my error, and not one I take lightly.

"We have speed limits for a reason, and the safety of my passenger and other road users is not negotiable."

Davidson added it was a "teachable" moment for her.
