Teenagers charged over serious crash in allegedly stolen car
by Simon McCarthy · Newcastle HeraldA teenager accused of crashing a stolen car near Maitland, then fleeing from the scene leaving another boy injured in the wreck, will face court next week.
Police allege the 14-year-old, who stands accused of a litany of offences relating to the alleged vehicle theft and crash, took the car from a property at Ashtonfield, near Maitland, before losing control at South Seas Drive.
The car became airborne, police allege, before rolling and landing outside a residential property in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29.
Police allege the driver fled the scene, leaving a 14-year-old passenger, who was assessed at the scene by paramedics before he was taken to hospital under guard.
His injuries were not deemed life-threatening, police said in a statement.
Officers alleged the sedan had been stolen from a home in Coromandel Close, Ashtonfield, about an hour before the crash. A search of the car allegedly uncovered a mobile phone and balaclava, police said. The items were seized and the vehicle was towed for forensic examination.
The injured boy was later charged with aggravated breaking-and-entering, and being carried in an allegedly stolen car. He was given bail and has been ordered to appear before a children's court later this month.
On Thursday afternoon, investigators said they had charged a second 14-year-old boy at Beresfield with nine offences.
The charges included affray, aggravated breaking and entering, and several counts related to his alleged manner of driving and the crash.
Officers initially refused bail before it was formally refused in a children's court. The boy will remain in custody until facing the same court again on Tuesday, October 6.
