NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to Tighes Hill TAFE at 1.15pm on November 27 to reports that students were affected by heat.

More than 700 year 5 and 6 students from 21 Hunter schools were on the oval to compete at the annual Mini EV Challenge.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said five students were treated at the scene and three of them were transported to John Hunter Hospital, affected by the heat.

"Five ambulances were dispatched along with the duty manager," they said.

NSW Ambulance acting superintendent Christie Marks said anyone can be affected by the hot weather.

"It's important to keep an eye on the symptoms and signs of heat-related illnesses, such as dizziness, thirst, and headaches. If you are feeling those, stay hydrated and keep cool.

More severe symptoms include seizures and confusion, then seek medical assistance and call Triple Zero (000).

Newcastle and its surroundings sweltered on Wednesday at a high of 30 degrees, and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued low to severe heatwave warnings.

Heat peaked across the Hunter with 36 degrees in Maitland, Cessnock and Scone, and the Williamtown weather station reaching 37 degrees.

The Newcastle Herald has contacted TAFE NSW and events organiser Career Links for comment.
