Pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by car

A pedestrian has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital after being hit by a car.

The person was in a serious condition after the incident on on Derby St in Westport about 5.45pm on Tuesday. 

The pedestrian was using a walking frame, Stuff reported.

Police said the driver of the car stopped to give the pedestrian first aid and has been helping police with their investigation.

The serious crash unit was also called to the scene and police were working to establish how the crash happened.

Police urged anyone who saw the crash to call 105.
