Student hit by car in need of new wheelchair

· Otago Daily Times Online News

A student is hoping to get back to doing what they love after they were struck by a car on a pedestrian crossing earlier this month.

Jamie Stillwell, 20, is raising money to replace their wheelchair, which was damaged beyond repair in the crash on April 14.

On a Givealittle page established earlier this month, Stillwell said they had a genetic disorder which impacted their ability to walk unaided.

Having a wheelchair allowed them to "continue volunteering with Girl Guiding NZ, participate in my community, access education and pursue my passions".

"But unfortunately, for a complicated mix of reasons, I am not eligible for a funded wheelchair," they said.

"So the wheelchair I was using when I was hit by the car was one I had funded myself and is not something I have the money to replace."

A replacement was expected to cost about $9000.

As of last night, the Givealittle had surpassed $10,000.

The Otago Daily Times reported a wheelchair user was taken to hospital after they were hit on a Macandrew Rd pedestrian crossing in Dunedin.

Stillwell was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital as a precautionary measure, police said at the time. — Allied Media
