Car 'totally written off' after alleged drink-driver's failed escape

· Otago Daily Times Online News

An alleged drunk Dunedin driver who tried to flee police immediately reversed into a fence leaving his vehicle damaged beyond repair.

The black BMW collided with a parked van at the intersection of County and Culloden Rd, Kaikorai, about 1am yesterday.

Behind the wheel of the car was an 18-year-old man, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said.

However, he reversed into a fence which damaged the car even further.

The teenager was found getting out of the crashed vehicle when police arrived and was "immediately arrested".

He recorded a breath alcohol level of 877mcg - the legal limit for people aged 20 and over is 250mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.

He was also a disqualified driver and his vehicle was impounded for 28 days, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.

"But it would appear that it is totally written off."

The teenager would appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week charged with dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and excess breath alcohol over 400mcg, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
