China Could Beat the US to Mars Samples and Trigger a New Sputnik Moment

This could be another Sputnik moment. Only this time the finger is pointed at China instead of the USSR.

China’s effort to become the first country ever to return material from the surface of Mars is gathering pace. Mission planners have narrowed the list of candidate landing sites for the Tianwen-3 robotic Mars sample-return mission from an original 86 down to just eight, with a single final target to be chosen before the end of 2026.

Chinese officials say Tianwen-3 remains targeted for launch around 2028, with the goal of returning roughly 500 grams of Martian rock and dust to Earth in 2031. If the mission holds to that timeline, China would beat the United States to one of the most sought-after prizes in modern planetary science, and could give researchers an unprecedented opportunity to search returned Martian material for evidence of past life.

The site-selection process combines scientific and engineering criteria, including geological age, evidence of past water activity, habitability, and the potential for a site to preserve biological signals.

Regions rich in clay minerals are considered among the most attractive candidates, because clays can help preserve organic molecules and other traces of ancient environments.

The eight sites on the shortlist have not been publicly identified. Earlier planning by the mission team focused on three broad northern landing zones already familiar to Chinese Mars planners: Amazonis Planitia, Chryse Planitia and Utopia Planitia. Utopia Planitia is where the Zhurong rover set down aboard Tianwen-1 in 2021. Which specific locations within these zones, if any, survived into the eight-site shortlist have not been disclosed.

Elevation is another important constraint. Because Mars has such a thin atmosphere, the lander needs to touch down well below the planet’s average elevation, where the air is dense enough for the descent system to work effectively. This requirement alone rules out several otherwise scientifically appealing regions.

Tianwen-3 is designed to look deeper than a rover exploring only the surface. Its lander is planned to carry a drill capable of reaching roughly six and a half feet (two meters) below ground, where ancient chemical evidence stands a better chance of survival. Material near the Martian surface is exposed to radiation and oxidizing conditions that can damage or alter organic molecules over time, so reaching deeper could give the mission access to material that has been better shielded.

Alongside the drill and an onboard scoop, the mission plans to use a small drone with a range of a few hundred meters, allowing the team to collect samples from beyond the lander’s immediate reach.

Tianwen-3 is planned to lift off on two Long March 5 heavy-lift rockets from the Wenchang Space Launch Site. One rocket would carry the lander and the ascent vehicle that will lift the collected samples off Mars; the other would carry the orbiter and the Earth-return spacecraft that will meet those samples in Mars orbit before beginning the trip back.

Mars launch windows only open every 26 months, when Earth and Mars align favorably. The window Tianwen-3 is targeting runs from December 2028 into January 2029.

Another Sputnik moment?

While Tianwen-3 continues to report progress toward its targeted 2028 launch period, NASA’s own Mars Sample Return architecture no longer has a confirmed schedule or funding path. The agency currently describes the campaign as a proposed mission, with no launch date, leaving the samples cached by the Perseverance rover without a confirmed ride back to Earth.

That contrast between the two space missions has drawn a warning from Scott Hubbard, a former head of NASA’s Mars program who previously directed the agency’s Ames Research Center. Hubbard told Space.com that Chinese progress on Tianwen-3, if the reported schedule holds, would represent a Sputnik moment for the United States, and that Beijing could be the first to find evidence of life on another planet.

“China will not only grab the headlines but may be the first to find evidence of life on another planet,” Hubbard told Space.com.

The mission will look for microbial traces that could resemble early forms of life on Earth, while also allowing for the possibility that Mars may have produced biologically unfamiliar forms of life through its own distinct evolutionary history.

Tianwen-3 is not the only ambitious Mars mission on the horizon. The European Space Agency’s Rosalind Franklin rover, which carries the same-sized drill, is targeting an October 2028 launch, with a roughly two-year cruise and a landing at the clay-rich plain of Oxia Planum in late 2030. NASA and ESA continue to weigh on how to bring the Perseverance rover’s cached samples back to Earth as well.

Between now and the end of 2026, Chinese planners will need to convert their shortlist of eight down to a single landing site. Between now and 2028, they will need to qualify and build the flight hardware. And if everything holds together, by 2031 the first samples ever collected from the surface of another planet could be waiting inside a Chinese laboratory.
