Actor Byun Woo Seok’s excessive airport security incident leads to prosecution of private security firm head and guard

On October 22 KST, the Incheon International Airport Police announced that a private security company head, Mr. A, and a security guard, Mr. B, both in their 40s, have been booked without detention and sent to the prosecution on charges of violating the Security Business Act.

Earlier, two other security guards involved in the incident were also booked but were not charged, as authorities found no evidence of illegal actions.

Mr. A and Mr. B are accused of violating the Security Business Act during the process of guarding actor Byun Woo Seok at Incheon International Airport on September 12 KST. The allegations state that they intimidated other passengers and overstepped the boundaries of their security duties.

Byun Woo Seok was at the airport to attend an Asian fan meeting tour in Hong Kong, where large crowds of fans gathered to see him. Controversy arose after eyewitness accounts circulated on social media, claiming that the security firm controlling the crowd had blocked gates, shone bright lights at passengers, and even checked their boarding passes.

The police concluded that the actions of Mr. A and his team, including shining flashlights on passengers and inspecting boarding passes, constituted violations of the Security Business Act. Under this law, security personnel are prohibited from infringing on others’ rights or interfering with legitimate activities during their duties. Additionally, security guards are not permitted to intimidate or use force beyond the scope of their duties.
