Jonathan Says He Has Completed All Korean Naturalization Exams: "It Was So Hard It Made Me Want to Curse"

Broadcast entertainer Jonathan has shared an update on his Korean naturalization process and opened up about his honest feelings.

On May 18, Singer-songwriter Jung Jae Hyung released a video featuring Jonathan and Patricia on his YouTube channel Fairy Jaehyung.

During the episode, Jeong Jae Hyung asked Jonathan, “Is your nationality currently Congolese or Korean?

Jonathan was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and moved to Korea with his family during childhood. He came to Korea as a refugee at the age of seven, grew up attending school in Korea, and is now actively working across both television and YouTube. While he is widely loved for his natural Korean language skills and witty sense of humor, he still holds Congolese citizenship.

Regarding this, Jonathan replied, “My nationality is still the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” adding, “But I have already completed all of the naturalization exams.” He explained, “I have finished all the preparations I can do, and I am now waiting for the results.”

Upon hearing this, Jung Jae Hyung expressed surprise, saying, “I heard that the exam is extremely difficult.” Jonathan responded, “It’s possible to pass if you live in Korea for a long time,” while admitting that the level of difficulty is far from easy. In particular, he shared, “When you see the questions, there are things that make you think, ‘Do I really need to know this much?’”

Jonathan explained in detail, saying, “For example, there are questions about which documents you need to obtain from places like family registries, community centers, or district offices. They ask what documents Korean people would need in certain situations and what they are called.”

He added that the exam includes very practical, real-life scenarios, which surprised Jung Jae Hyung as well. Jonathan laughed and said, “I also took the Korean language proficiency test, and thankfully, I did well.” However, he added humorously, “When you look at the questions, it feels like you can hear people swearing from the back of the exam room,” drawing laughter.

Jung Jae Hyung laughed and responded, “It must be difficult even for people who speak Korean quite well,” and Jonathan agreed, saying, “It really is that hard.”

Jonathan also spoke sincerely about his dreams while continuing his career in Korea. He said, “I hope I can continue doing this grateful work for a long time. I have many things I want to achieve through it.” He added, “I want to work harder on YouTube and reach even more people.”
