Anthropic’s Claude Duet can prepare payroll, chase unpaid invoices and draft a client brief while your laptop’s shut. Announced October 21 as a research preview, the agent is built for professionals and small-business owners, with work continuing on a cloud computer after you leave the app.

That puts it in the same growing category as Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, both pitched around everyday assistance such as reservations and personal errands. Anthropic says Duet’s stronger ground is work, and acknowledges that tasks such as booking tickets are a weakness.

Duet starts the morning with a briefing drawn from connected apps, including email and calendars. It can prepare replies, then check back every few hours for developments you’ve asked it to flag. Those checks aren’t continuous: an urgent message can sit until the next check-in, and Anthropic acknowledges that Duet can misunderstand a conversation or get urgency wrong.

The work can extend well beyond an inbox. Its connections include QuickBooks and Stripe for spotting unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, Gusto for preparing payroll information for review, and HubSpot for follow-ups based on a deal’s history.

It can also build forecasts, dashboards and web apps. Finished work lands in a Make tab for review and editing; a separate Tasks tab tracks progress, with completion left for you to mark.

Anthropic’s customer examples include Amin Ebrahimi of Shahs of Kabob, a business with about 110 employees, who used Duet for accounting, customer support, marketing and invoices across locations. Brand strategist Mya Dalton said it prepared a client briefing from her calendar and offered to reschedule a call placed just before a flight.

Duet uses Claude Opus 5.5 and carries over your existing Claude memory, skills and connected apps. It’s a separate product available through iOS, Android and the web, with access to more than 6,000 marketplace connectors and plugins. Microsoft 365 support and saved-logins access through 1Password aren’t available yet.

Anthropic says Duet must show the proposed action and get approval before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting anything. Securities trading and transfers between accounts are prohibited even with approval.

You also can’t watch or take over its cloud browser. Anthropic acknowledges that its defenses against malicious instructions embedded in emails and websites aren’t perfect.

The preview is invitation-only for US users on Claude Pro or Max, with no extra Duet fee. Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year; Max starts at $100 a month.

Team and Enterprise accounts aren’t eligible yet. Background checks and morning briefings draw from the same Claude usage limits as ordinary chats, so delegating more work can exhaust your allowance sooner.
